Cylcing: How much do you save by building your own bike?

I was wondering how much money you save if you built your own road bike from independent parts or whether you save money by having the store build it for you? If you have real life experiences with that, that would be a strong positive.

It's really going to depend on where you are getting your parts from. If you are pulling parts from scrapped bikes, maybe working with a new frame and some new parts, you might be able to build one cheaper than manufacturers, but it'd be difficult. Bike components can be very expensive and it's harder for individuals to get the prices on cheap components that big bike manufacturers can get.

On the opposite side, though, you may be a lot happier with the bike you built yourself. Both for the feeling of accomplishment and also for the fact that you can customize most details and use the components you want, the wheels you want, the handlebars you love, and so on.
my stepfather does it all the time by getting the parts really cheap on ebay trading them for others and the whole thing but I would say that he is definitely a professional assembly tech in his own right and has all of the required tools to do it...so, yes u can save a lot of money but if you don't have the tools or the know how its really not worth it...good luck
a complete bike from a given producer is far cheaper than buying all the pieces and putting one together. even getting into using your existing componenents on a frame set can quickly get expensive if you have to modify much. you have to remember when you buy parts you are paying mark up on them, usually much higher mark up than complete bikes. it makes it kind of unpracticle to build your own, unless it is something you want to do just for the sake of it.
Big manufacturers are buying components in such big volumes that they end up paying a small fraction of what you will for them. Unless you want some really strange mix of components of get a deal you can't pass up on a great frame (like I did), it's going to cost more to build your own bike.
$0 ! Buy a parts catalog and add up all the costs ! Far cheaper to buy a ready made bike. Actually I thought of doing this myself. I got a bike nashbar catalog and starting adding up the costs for each part....The only thing you'll get out of it is the joy of buliding your own. Bike companies buy their parts in bulk, and save alot of money in the process.
It's cheaper to buy a complete bike than buy everything separate. I prefer to build my own bikes, but I am very meticulous when it comes to putting them together. I only want the best.
