You'll find better bikes, they will honor repair warranties, and provide you with service _after_ the sale. Will you pay more? Sure. But if you buy a cheezy bike at a chain store you'll just end up taking it to a shop to get fixed anyways, and then it will cost you as much as if you had bought the good bike at the shop to begin with.
