Free ride bikes, which are a good buy / value? |
Hi all, My wife and I decided to pick up a new hobby - downhill rides. A friend suggested that a Freeride bike is a better fit, since we are new and won't do much of anything too crazy in this DH. Before I hit the local bike store, I wanted to learn as much as I could about what to look for and what is considered a "MUST" VS a "WANT to have" items. My budget is around $3,000 per bike (and need two). Thanks! PS. Brands and models you have/had would be appreciated. Freeride is a better option because these bikes are just as tough as downhill bikes, but they also have the front deraileur whereas most downhill bikes do not. With $3k, you can get a good one for sure. You cannot go wrong with Specialized, but they are very expensive and 3k might not be enough. I personally prefer Rocky Mountain as these bikes are normally ordered by pros and are handmade in Canada - a rarity as most bikes, even reputable brands are made in Taiwan. Also, Rocky Mountain started the freeride movement! I also like Kona and have good experience with their bikes as being rock solid - only downside to rock solid performance is usually their bikes are really heavy. In addition, you can't go wrong with Trek or Cannondale. Supposely, Santa Cruz is supposed to be the best and also the most expensive. But if you go with any of these brands, you won't go wrong. Have fun! |
