Will this setup/cassette upgrade work? |
I really want to change the cassette in my bike because I spin out when I'm trying to go fast on short 2-3 mile rides. im trying to do it myself because im in college and on a limited budget. bike store estimated this would cost me +$100 my current setup: Trek 7000 21sp Hybrid Sunrace 13-34 7sp cassette SR NEX 48-38-28 Crank Shimano TX50 rear derailler Shimano C102 front derailleur Matrix 550 rims with alloy hubs I'd like to install this road shimano 11-28T cassette if possible http://www.niagaracycle.com/product_info... 1. Does anyone know if this will be compatible/work OK? 2. What kind of compatibility issues do i need to need to look out for if any? 3. Will I be able to do this myself? 4. Will it likely shift as well or will it be rouger after changing the stock cassette? thanks! Sunrace uses Shimano's spacing and Hyperglide spline pattern, so there aren't any compatibility issues there. You'll probably also need a different cassette lock ring to work with the 11 cog. Again, the equivalent Shimano part will most likely work with your hub. Performing the upgrade yourself is very straight forward, requiring just a chain whip, a lock ring tool, and a big wrench. The shifting should be ok, but if the chain is old and worn replace it. Chains and cassettes wear together, and an old chain on a new cassette can skip a lot. yeah. the 7speed the sunrace cassette is just an off brand that works with the shimano system. the shimano 7sp system will naturally work with this 7sp cassette. in fact it might even work better. i suggest changing the chain at the same time. your old one will be worn to your old cassette and it might not work as well with the new because of that wear. The rear cassette swap will work. My concern is over what do you consider spinning out? Do you know how fast you are peddling in rpm? Your current set up with a 48-13t combo should give you a good top speed on the flats(25mph+), a 48-11t will give you slightly more speed, but the question is how fast can you spin the cranks? If you are only spinning at 60~70rpm you need to work on your peddling. For example a 44-11t combo with high peddling cadence will get you over 30mph. |
