Disk brakes on mountain bike? How to adjust? |
They seem to be rubbing just slightly - is this okay? (I just got my first one, I have no idea) should I take it back and have the store adjust them if its not (have to admit, that would be a pain) or should I just suck it up and learn how to adjust them myself? If the last - where do I learn how to do it? Thanks a bunch Slight rubbing is normal, but it shouldn't stop the tire immediately when you lift the bike & spin the tire. You had better learn how to adjust the brakes yourself as disc brakes require constant maintenance. Go online and find the user guide for your model. The installation guide will tell you the steps to set the brake position and replace the pads. I'm assuming you have mechanical disc brakes because they usually come with sub-$1000 bikes, which are the majority of bikes sold. Mechanical disc brakes require you to reset the calipers manually as the pads wear. You know you have mechanicals if there is a cable extending from the brake, or if you can see a cable when squeezing the brake. You'll also periodically have to pull the tires off the bike and clean the brake dust from the system. Rub the rotor (silver round thing attached to the wheel) with a dry cloth. Never touch it with your bare hands as oils cause trouble. Clean the actual brake & pad area with a q tip to get rid of the dust. probably not okay. is it hydraulic or mechanical? does it rub the whole disc or just part of the disc? if hydraulic, did you happen to squeeze the brake lever by accident whilst you were having wheels off ? take it back for them to adjust, and ask them is that normal?? if not, how do you fix it if I were outside in the trails Get the shop do it for you if its free. If not need to know what model and brand is your brakes to give you more advice |
