Do i really need precoat, undercoat to give my bike a new paint job diy style? |
to me... sanding off the uneven surface & blast off a new paint with clear coating is enuff... true? & those automotive paint sold at stores are more suitable for metal surfaces but are they suitable for my plastic fairing??? thanks. Are you atlking about spraying it your self using auto paint and a spray gun, or using those cheap paint cans? Don't use paint cans!! Depending on the quality of the serface you may get away with scuffing it with a 3M grey scotchbright scuffing pad, clean, spray one wet coat of sealer primer and move on to paint and clear. If the serface is pretty bad, then sand with 220 grit, clean, laydown one wet coat of epoxy sealer primer, let flash for an hour then lay down at least 2 wet coats of a 2k urethane serfacer primer. Let cure overnight then resand with 600 grit, clean, and contenue with base and clear coat. Source(s): I'm a custom painter. If you're going to strip the old paint down to bare metal, then you need an undercoat, or primer to help your color coat stick. Otherwise the new paint will start peeling off in a short time. If you're just surface sanding an old paint job, then a primer coat is still good to have, as it helps smooth the surface and fills in little scratches and irregularities left from sanding. If you're painting over a plastic fairing, then you need to throw in some flex additives to keep the finished paint from cracking. Talk to your paint dealer to get the right stuff... |
