I twisted my ankle, but can't get an ice pack or ankle brace. What should I do? |
I was hiking with some of the other folks from my dorm, and on the way down the mountain I lost my footing on a rock and twisted my ankle. I know it is not broken or even sprained, because I can walk on it, but it does hurt pretty bad. I can't get an ice pack or ankle brace here on the university campus, and if I were to go out and buy them, it would require riding two miles on my bike to the store, then two miles back... and that is not something I want to do. I need a solution that will make my ankle feel better before classes start on Monday and I have to hike across campus and back every day. What do you suggest? rest for now and elevate the ankle wear three or four pairs of socks on that ankle it would work perfectly if you have converse high tops those are just as great as braces or just wear your tallest pair of shoes take as much ibuprofin as possible hope you feel better and could one of your friends possibly go to the store? borrow a frozen veggie bag from someone and lay it over the ankle soak your foot in ice water...it will have the same effect as ice...15min on 20 min off. If it hurts so badly you can't walk on it at all I wouldn't be surprised if it is sprained, or even broken. It's very easy to do. The only solution I can think of for you is to get someone to go and get some painkillers. Ice packs won't do anything anyway apart from reduce the swelling. But this has to be done straight away after the injury occurs or it won't work anyway. Yep, veggie bags work great....or plastic sandwhich bags. Or can you ask a friend to go get them for you? Campus nurse? I don't know why you can't get an ankle brace or ice pack on campus, don't you have a campus infirmary? Anyway, Get some ice (surely you have an ice machine in your dorm/ice trays in your refrig.) , put it in a dishcloth, washcloth, towel, or whatever you have, wet it, and put it on your ankle, 10 - 15 minutes, 3-4 times/day. Or just put some water and ice in a bucket, pot, bowl, or any other item you have that will hold it and soak your foot in ice water for about 10 -15 minutes, 3 - 4 times/day. If you can't get an ankle brace, wear thick socks with tennis shoes (or 2 thin cotton socks), that should give you some support. Or do you have a sock to spare? Cut it lengthwise and wrap it around your ankle over your sock secure it with a safety pin, but not too tight, and then put on your tennis shoes. Good Luck! PS: OK I see that you posted ice was out, cold water will do fine, just let it run and get it as cold as possible. Take some Tylenol too, it'll help with the swelling, and try to stay off of it, put a pillow under your feet and keep it up as much as possible. If it still hurts after taking those measures, you might want it X-Rayed. |
