Does Schwinn still make good bikes? |
I was surprised to see two of their models in a big box store for $150. Yeah, that big box store. Looking for a reliable bike to ride about 4 miles each way to work each day. Schwinn still makes some very good bikes - but you can't buy them at any big box store, (especiall that one!!). If you want a reliable bike that isn't going to break down on you - get it at a real bike shop. You might find a used one for around $150, or some decent new bike for $300-$400. The biggest problem with big-box-bikes is that they have very cheap parts, are EXTREMELY heavy, and are put together by high school kids with no idea what they are doing. Hit your local bike shop and talk to them about your needs and price range. They'll hook you up. The schwinn bikes at department stores are very very different from the one you get at a local bike shop. If you buy one at the big store, be prepared to take it to the bike shop to get fixed anyways. You're better off getting it at the bike shop, they'll make sure it fits (you'll hate riding a bike that doesn't fit, and probably won't ride it. Now _that's_ a waste of money) and honor repair warranties, as well as give the necessary tune up after about 10 hours of riding. Schwinn doesn't make any bikes anymore. The name was bought by Pacific Cycle, who makes relatively inexpensive bikes. Still, I purchased a Schwinn Varsity, which is a 14-speed road bike. I was surprised to find Presta valves, stainless spokes, an aluminum frame and fairly good components for a $200 bike. It doesn't compare to the Giant that I have my eyes on, but it's served me well so far for about a year (around 1000 miles or so). It's not the Schwinn that used to be ... that's gone forever, it seems. Still, for cheap bikes, some of them are ok. They are still classified as more of a "toy" bike, which is part of the reason that you'll see stickers on the bike with warnings about not using them competitively and such, but they are good toys. i honestly think they don't Yowza, Unfortunaly a Chiniese Company called Pacific or Pacifica bicycles bought out a few big name brands here in the US and Schwinn just happen to be one of them. The quality and components have been lowered to Walmarts bike standards. There is one Schwinn bike I would consider for just putt-putting around the neighborhood, campus or boardwalk. The Schwinn "Rocket" with disk brakes. do not a buy a schwin if your looking for a decent bike? |
