Are Walmart Bmx Bikes really crap? |
I read some answers on this site that people said that the cheap bikes in wal-mart can fall off any second. I bought a bmx bike there 4 years ago and rode it for 2 years until the fork got bended. The only reason it got bent is because I kept on crashing and so it bended. The other parts were pretty cool and now I am thinking about buying one, hopefully for about 60-90 dollars at walmart. Could someone tell me if there are any stores online or stores that sell cheap bmx bikes like target, toyrus, etc? You get what you pay for. If all you need the bike for is just to ride the bike down the sreet every once in a while then a wall-mart bike is probley fine( however i would recomend target instead). However if you plan to ride the bike every day for more than 1 or 2 miles i would recomend spending the extra money and buying a bike from a non-wallmart brand company (like GT, Redline, Dimondback ect...). yes i got one and it blew up I will only say that with bikes, you typically get what you pay for. Personally, I'd never buy a bike online - I'd prefer to give it a test ride...but your mileage may plainly vary. no, they arent really crap. They are fine for the people they market them too. They arent marketed as true bmx bikes, they are marketed for pre-teens. if youre 13+ and want a bike thats fun to ride and can take the abuse youre going to give it, you dont want a walmart bike. you bought a $100 bike that lasted 2 years... wouldnt it make more sense to buy a $300 name brand bike that will last and can take the abuse a true bmx bike can take? You would want a full chomoly frame/fork, walmart bikes are made from left over scrap cheap steel tubing. a walmart aluminum bike is probably worse then their steel bikes... you actually need a brain to weld aluminum... not so with steel. youre going to want a splindled bottom bracket. the bottom bracket is what causes the things that the pedals are attached too (crank arms) turn. This is the strongest possible connection between the crank arm and bb. a square taper (self explanatory... its square) is something cheaply made and is known to literally break in half. (and if youve never had this happen too you, imagine riding a bike down a rough, rooted, pea gravel, mossy, slippery trail and having the bottom bracket break) There are many brand name bike companies that make affordable quality bikes. Raleigh for one. I believe they start at $190... they arent going to be as nice as a hoffman, but they are going to be 15x better then the huffy or mongoose. Ebay. if youre not planning on treating a bmx bike like it wants to be treated, you can find great used bikes for very reasonable prices. like i said, the cheapest brand name bike is going to be better then a huffy, schwinn, mongoose, roadmaster, murry, etc. I absolutely agree with the previous poster. redline makes great bikes for the price. your best option is to buy a used bike. either that or a bike from major BMX companys that is older and outdated. such as Haro, Hoffman, Diamondback, Schwinn, or maybe Specialized. I know that at danscomp.com there is a scratch and dent section that has newer bikes that had a manufacturing problem but have been tested and are still safe to ride. I you still fit on that old bike and just need a new fork, get a new fork. dont buy unnessary things. take the old bike to any shop, ask for new forks to be put on it(you might need a new wheel) and just do that. http://www.danscomp.com/serve.php?serve=... Yes, Wal-Mart bikes are crap. Try Performance Bikes or a real bike shop. It's worth it in the long run. If you think their bikes are too expensive, buy one used on Craigslist. Life is too short to ride a Wal-Mart bike. I would rather not ride a bike at all than ride a Wal-Mart bike--they are unsafe. |
