Is this true that you have to buy Schwinn brand parts for Schwinn brand bikes? |
Or is it true with things like headset bearings or the like? I am looking into buying a schwinn tempo road bike and I wouldn't want to get stuck with a bike that I can't find replacement parts or have to go to one specific store. The person that told me this was going along the lines that everything, including derailer, cassette, shifters, etc., all have to be schwinn. I wouldn't think so, but I'm just double checking. Thanks. Most of the stuff is interchangeable. On the older Schwinn bikes, they will use stuff specific to Schwinns and nobody else. The big example here is the tire size 26 x 1 3/8. There is an EA1 that fits only the Schwinns. The 26 x 1 3/8 EA3 fits all the other brands. These two are NOT interchangable. The Schwinn specific ones can be a challenge to find, but any bike shop should be able to order them. If you need bearings, pull the old ones and bring them in, that way the shop can see exactly what you need. Some of the parts may be tough to find because the technology has changed a lot since the tempo (not much out there with down tube shifters), it just depends on what it is. This was true of some of the older Schwinns especially the tires, but has not been the case for many years. I have changed lots of parts on lots of Schwinns including derailleurs, shifters, wheels, bottom bracket bearings, seat posts and had no trouble finding replacements. No not at all. Really the only parts that were Schwinn specific were the tires. And they were fazed out in the 60's and maybe early 70's. If you are restoring an old bike then it is like a car and you want to get original parts. No, not necessarily. In fact, most of the best teams and riders chose to pick the best frames and parts for optimum efficiency in the running of their machines. Therefore, choose the parts that will best suit you and your bicycle overall, not just those that match the brand. Not everything has to be Schwinn, many things are universal and interchangeable, but some items will be spec. |
