Biking as a workout?

Hi all. My boyfriend and I have decided to start biking as a lil workout to add to our daily routine. However, we're not sure what kind of bikes to get. We would like to be able to go off road on some trails...but nothing extreme like full blown mountain biking. Can anyone suggest his/her bikes that are reasonably priced? we live in NJ so if you can even recommend a store that'd be great too.

I live in Rochester NY but go to the biggest bike store. Here it's Towners they have everything.Ask about Specialized Bikes They have one called the crosstrainer that is just what you want. It has medium width tires. Normal handlebars and a nice sized cushiony seat and 18 gears. Everything you could ever want and it's priced in the 300-400 range depending on accessories. But that's what i like. Check them out. If you can't find the Specialized brand Schwinn makes one too. But In New Jersey you should be able to get one.
Target! They had some really nice bikes for fair prices. Biking is such a great workout.
walmart is a good place to find fair prices bikes, and the best bikes they carry are mongoose mountain bikes. they range all different prices and they are overall pretty reliable.
Target, Walmart and even Toys-R-Us has adult bikes (not sure if you have that in NJ) You want a Mountain bike since you can ride them on different surfaces
NEVER, NEVER, buy a bike at Target, Walmart, or K-Mart ! They are not only cheap in price, they are cheap in quality ! AKA: JUNK ! If you want a real bike, go to a bike shop. Tell them what kind of riding you plan to do, and they'll help you out. Many shops will even give you free adjustments for a year.
Carl is right NEVER BUY A BOX STORE BIKE. To find a local bike shop do a quick Google search. Most bike shops have a good selection of entry level off-road bikes that will serve you well. Ride a Box store bike then ride one from one from Trek, Giant, or any from the other REAL bike makers and you will never ride Box store junk again.
Carl at MT couldn't be more right. These bikes at major stores like that are junk. I would suggest D and Q in South Jersey or even Dick's Sporting Goods have good bikes. You do want to stick with a mountain bike.
