Helmet on Streetbike, can you hear whats next to you?

I am going to be buying a bike and never rode one before. I will be taking the saftey course. My question is wearing a full helmet, which i will always do, can you hear cars or what sounds can you even hear over your bike? It seems like you cant hear much. I tryed the helmet on in a store but that cancled out most noise!

yes -
You need to be aware - visually of all other cars and vehicles on the road.

They don't care about you so you have to be very defensive and ready at all times.
Yep, not only that... when you're driving, all you hear is the noise of the wind in your helmet and your engine, that's why you always have, like mentionned above, to know exactly and at any time what's around you...
You can hear everything. If you don't wear one -- pretty soon you may hear nothing at all.
You can hear horns, emergency signals, and other motorcycles & cars w/ loud pipes. You largely depend on your vision and SIDPE for safety when riding a bike. In addition to my helmet, I wear hearing protection, because I am starting to notice the effects of years of riding without it...
Yes you can hear everything except the wind (good ones block it). The reason you couldnt hear anything is because you were in the store, not the street. You can hear noises made by cars, horns, tires, your bike, and at stoplights your buddies talking.
I have a Shoei full helmet. I can hear most road noise yet it is muffled. Sirens and such are easily identifiable. I don't have a wind noise issue, only if all my vents are open which creates a different kind of noise. I rely on my vision while riding...stay very alert to your surroundings...all around you so you can react properly. Good luck and have fun riding safely.
I wear a full face and on the city streets and you can hear most noises clearly there is a little muffling but not much. Where I find I loose a lot of hearing is on the super highway my bike is reving louder and there is a lot of wind noise because I don't have any fairings on my bike (yet) so I'm always checking my mirrors for situational awareness.

BTW full face is the only way to go, I've had more big bugs bounce off the visor instead of bouncing off of my face or my glasses than I care to think about. Don't wear a "skid lid" they're for organ donors

Be seen to ride and ride to be seen!
