Tax, Tag, Title, Destination, etc. etc. What the hell?



I have never bought a new car or motorcycle. But I want to buy a new Ninja 250. I went to American Auto Sports and saw one on the show room floor. The sales guy said it is $2999.00. I said great I will take it.

I know there is Tax, Tag, and Title fees. So I figured that the total price might be up to $3500. But no... he brought me back a quote of $4303. I said what is this? He said Tax, Tag, Title and Destination fee's. Tax is about $300 (expected) and Tag and title is about $200. I asked him why the hell is there so much more in that equation, and he said there is a shipping fee to get it to the store. Well I walked out. He tried to stop me and said he could negotiate to about $3800. I still said no.

My question. Is this a typical final price for a band new bike, whose MSRP is $2999.00? My goodness, with all the extra fat, that is about half of the price of the bike.

Keep Shopping. Some dealers are notorious with add on fees. Depending on your location, you may not have to pay the dealer for tags and tax, you can pay at your county clerks office when you register the vehicle. Beware of 'doc' fees. Some places charge a couple of hundred bucks to sign the paperwork. Stand your ground ! You saved 500 bucks the first time you started to walk out...Good Luck ! Source(s): Ex-Motorcycle Salesman
I'm afraid so. Destination fees are found on any motor vehicle or bike or truck. Taxes, title, registration fees and insurance are all above and beyond the MSRP.
Destination fees are part of their markup and their excuse to get a big profit for themselves. When was the last time you paid "destination fees" on a refrigerator or other large household appliance. Always ask for the "price out the door" with all fees and taxes included.
Cut out the middle man, but a used bike.
Shipping fee is too high. Price 3 to 4 shops in your area for a realistic shipping fee cost. I do pay the dealer the tag and tax at sale time, I would rather they stand in line to get my plates then waste my time and there is no (local) extra fee for that. However the last bike I got was a 1500 Vulcan and the shipping fee was not even that high. The 1500 has a dry weight of between 700 and 800 lbs. Good for walking, that lets them know you do not want to get walked all over.

BTY you take the weight of the bike and look up shipping costs online for a "rough" idea of what real shipping is. Of course the bike has prep work done when removed from the shipping crate so a lot of that is built in.
Like the previous guy said ask for a "out the door price" LOL I once wanted to test drive a Motorcycle in a in Hawaii and the sales man ask to make a copy of my licenses, finally I walked out after waiting 20-30 minutes. The next day I had to call the manager and threaten to turn them into the better Business Burro. I said the H with them and told him just mail my freaking DL back!
