Downshifting/Upshifting on my Trek hybrid?

On just bought a Trek 7.3 Bike. On the left hand side the thumb control upshifts and the finger control downshifts. On the right side, the thumb downshifts and the finger upshifts. The store says they are supposed the be this way, opposite each other. Is this correct? If so, what is the reason for this strange user design?

Because moving to a bigger cog or chainring requires more force, hence your thumb, which is stronger.

Bigger chainring (front) is an upshift.

Bigger cog (rear) is a downshift.

Not strange at all, just the physics of levers.
