I need Baby dove help. Mainly with food!? |
Okay me and my family where bike riding when we found a dove on the road. It was trying to get away but can't because it's wing was broken and bleeding. it looked like another animal chewed it off. The dove is almost fully feathered. We are going to contact at vet/pet store tomorrow but the dove looks very weak. What kind of food would they eat? Oatmeal? Water? Help is badly needed! All answers are appreciated! You need to get the dove to a wildlife rehab in your area rather than a vet or a pet store. A dove is a wild animal, not a pet. A rehab will be able to feed it the proper diet, and fix it's wing and release it back into the wild if possible. Keep in mind it is also illegal for you to raise this bird on your own..all native birds are protected by law. You have done your part by saving the birds life..now hand it over to someone that can keep it alive. Look up a rehab in your area here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contacta... Source(s): me: ornithologist (bird biologist) try regular bird seed......if the bird is injured it may not feel like eating.....offer water bird owner try some regular bird seed and plenty of fresh water. If it doesnt eat any of the seed (which it might not being injured and scared out of its mind) but seems ok otherwise (not getting really weak, or seeming to die) I'd leave it till morning when you can get it to a vet or wildlife rehab. If it does seem to be losing strength you can try to feed it some baby bird formula with a syringe (slowly put a little in the birds mouth and let it swallow, just a little bit- too much can make the bird aspirate and die) or you can try some softer food (breads, fresh veggies or fruits, some of the weaning formula for birds soaked in warm water to make it mushy, etc) you could also soak cheerios in some water until they are soggy. when we find baby pigeons thats what we give them cuz it has vitamins and everything and they like it but we forced feed them by opening their beak and putting it in there mouth. |
