I need tune up tips for a 1979 Yamaha 650 special motorcycle? |
The bike has been sitting unused for 2 years but stored inside in a climate controlled enviroment take the fuel hoses loose from the carbs put the ends in a clear bottle pour a little gas in the tank to see what comes out. you will have to put the petcock in the reserve position. if it looks & smells like gas all you need to do is hook the lines back up put some more gas in it and let it set in the reserve position to wet the carbs while you change the oil & put in a new battery then choke it and ride away. if what comes out of the tank looks like varnish & smells strange you will have to remove the tank & clean it with carb cleaner or a gallon of alcohol you get at the paint store then flush with a little gas before you put it back on. you may not have to clean the carbs if your lucky. I bought a 79 650 in 78 it was bullet proof I had to put new brushes in the alternator at about 8000 miles other that no problems it did vibrate a little but not as bad as a BSA or TRIUMPH. I once got a ticket for 100+ from a bear in the air I had my feet straight back over the tail lights laying belly down I used to ride like that when i was in a hurry. I was 8 miles down the road & looking at a used car when the cop pulled up asked if that was my bike over there then gave me a ticket it cost $118 .. when you ride at 100 or so for 5 or 6 miles if you cant get it in neutral dont worry it will be fine when it cools down. thanks for bringing back the memories and good luck stop at you library and see if they have the shop manual for you bike. AS a minimum replace all the fluids, motor oil,shocks and differential if you have one they are a major pain bro had a 81model known more common as a xs650 start with the twin carbs clean them check them over real good, change both plugs, new or good battery when it starts take + post loose if it dies your rectifier or stator or both are bad do not ever jumpstart this will burn them out they are not cheap do not be fooled by the kickstart it only works with a good battery /don`t know why hard to find shops to work on them 81 xs 650 special shade tree mech |
