Good locations for pedestrians to live around UCLA? |
I'll be starting a postdoc at UCLA this fall and was wondering which neighborhoods would be best for someone without a car. So I'd like to get to work by foot, bike, or bus. Hopefully, this neighborhood would have grocery stores, etc all within walking distance too. What should I expect for rent? Well as you hopefully already know, UCLA is located in Westwood which is very pedestrian-friendly because it is a typical college town. The majority of UCLA students live in the surrounding areas of Westwood and can manage to get by without a car because the campus itself, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, are all within walking distance of the apartments in Westwood. The biggest downside to living in Westwood is that it is extremely expensive because of its proximity to the campus. Landlords can get away with charging exorbitant rents even in very crappy apartments (that's the other thing, most buildings in Westwood are quite run-down although the area is very nice). For example, Westwood is so expensive that almost no one has their own room and shares with another person, sometimes even 2. I lived in a very crappy 3 bedroom apartment that I shared with 5 other girls and the total rent was like $3400. So you basically pay about $600 (adding in utilities) to SHARE a tiny room or over $1000 to have the room to yourself. Other cities where rents are more reasonable are the nearby towns of Palms, Santa Monica, West L.A., Culver City and many others. These parts of town all have good bus systems (look up the Metro Rapid, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus and Culver CityBus) and some people choose to ride their bikes but this is not as common because bike parking can be an issue and also Westwood streets are so congested with cars that bikers can have a rough time getting around. Good luck, you can e-mail me if you have any more questions. Source(s): Recent UCLA grad and L.A. native. City Of Westwood. |
