How can one safely park a motorcycle in boston without a garage spot?

I live in the boston area. I do not own a house or condo. I want to get a used harley, and I believe that I will be limited to parking my motorcycle on the street. Where else can I park a motorcycle at in boston? I am wondering if getting lowjack, a disk brake lock, and an alarm will be sufficient safety to parking my bike on the street in boston during the spring and summer months? I plan on having it stored in a secure area during the winter months. What other options are there than parking on the street during the spring and summer months in Boston?

That's a tough one. I live in NYC and garage my bike ('98 Suzuki Bandit 1200S) more to avoid it being knocked over than stolen. Maybe look into lots/garages, I'm sure there are some in Boston that would take a bike (not all do in NYC). If I had a Harley and parked it on the street, however, I would be worried about BOTH damage and theft. Here are some things I would do to make it a little more difficult and less attractive to a thief:

1) Cover the bike when parked - If a thief is cruising around in a van it isn't likely that he will stop at every covered bike to inspect it. Plus if you have the cover locked on it may be difficult to lift it up as well. Thieves usually look for specific makes/models to fill "orders" and if they don't know what it is they may move on.

2) Chain/lock - I would try and find an area where a 6' chain and lock would be sufficent to secure the rear wheel or, even better, the frame of the bike to something. Pole, sign post, city bike rack, whatever is solid enough to make it more time consuming to steal. Time is the thief's enemy and the more time it takes him the better the chances are that he will pass. Look into super heavy duty chains and locks specifically built for this purpose.

3) Disk lock - If your out on the town and can't bring a chain or cover this would be the minimum I would do to protect the bike. Four guys and a van can still pick up a bike and be gone in 30 seconds. It may stop joy riders, though.

4) Alarm/Lojack - I would think an alarm would be better than Lojack because if you go to sleep and the bike is there, then you wake up and it's not the theves have maybe as much as 6 hours lead time. It can be difficult to find the transmitter, though.

5) Steering lock - all bikes have some kind of way to lock the steering. I always do this. It's easy and is a deterant, no matter how small.

Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck
Check craigslist.com for garages or storage space for rent in your neighborhood. You don't want to park your bike on the curb overnight if you have any accessories on it. Worst case, get yourself a quality motorcycle wheel lock. See the link below.
