Can anyone tell me how the baby boomers and my parent's generation survived? |
These are the Lyrics' to Bucky Covington's "A Different World". I love this song - I laugh everytime I hear it, and honeslty wonder how my parents and grandparents made it so far. We were born to mothers who smoked and drank Our cribs were covered in lead based paint No child proof lids no seat belts in cars Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are We got daddy鈥檚 belt when we misbehaved Had three TV channels you got up to change No video games and no satellite All we had were friends and they were outside, playin鈥?outside It was a different life When we were boys and girls Not just a different time It was a different world School always started the same every day The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray Not every kid made the team when they tried We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose And every Sunday, all the stores were closed It was a different world! I was raised with the belt as was my husband. I spanked my daughter when she was really small but have noticed looking back (she's 15 now and an Air Force ROTC Honor Student entering her sophomore year) that I really didn't have too spank much. The threat was enough- and no it wasn't fear of a beating but rather the fear of being corrected in any form. My Mother smoked while pregnant and I did too. I turned out okay and so did my daughter. We rode our bikes everywhere and never dreamed of having brand new cars when we turned 16. We didn't talk back to our folks (unless you wanted your mouth mashed) or mutilate our bodies w/ piercings and ink either. Most of us managed to keep our knees together til out of high school and nowadays it's nothing to see a 14 year old girl with a baby. We wore clothing that actually covered our private parts and didn't throw fits about not being able to dress like sluts at school. This country can thank the secularists for ruining this nation's morals and with it the future for America's youth. I love the line "we got daddy's belt". If you have to make a child afraid of you in order to behave that is really sad. Edit: I grew up with time outs and other such examples negative/positive reinforcement. I never did things again either. The anti-God nanny state has kicked in. It's no mystery: the world is not as dangerous as the fear-mongers on the TV would have you believe. If it EVER had be we would all have died. When I was a child, I was fearless and I have the scars to prove it! Today, my parents would be locked up for child abuse. Worthless, gutless, cowards and fools, politically correct a** holes will be the death of us all! Yeah...I lived through all of that. Had the belt more times than I care to remember not to mention other assorted beatings. Yeah boy those are such fond memories. And yeah we stood like little robots in Bristol, Tennessee and recited the Lord's Prayer and then the pledge of allegiance like we did every day. Did it mean anything...nope...it's just what we had to say. And you're right...not every kid made the team. In fact, most kids got to sit the bench while the coaches' kids played. And yep the stores were all closed on Sunday...which drove my parents crazy. And yeah our parents did drink and smoke and didn't really spend much time with us except to knock us around for this and that. And some of us experienced car accidents without child seats...myself included...Thank God we have child seats today. And you know three channels absolutely sucked wind. I can't believe I watched Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Maud, and all that other garbage. Thank you HBO for giving us something worthy of our time. Yeah those were different times and I am so glad to be past them. |
