How do stores measure bike / bicycle sizes? ie.16",20" etc. Is it the outside tire or the inner rim or what? |
I need to get a new bike for my soon to be 6 year old. He is on the bigger side of an almost 6 year old (not fat, just build) and I have no clue on how to measure his current bike to get the next size up for his birthday next week. Please help! Kid's and adult's bikes are measured differently, btw. For kids, it's the wheel diameter, which may be printed on the side of the tire. If it's not, measure the outside of the tire from one side to the other - children's bikes are either 12", 16", 20" or 24", so there's enough variance that you'll be able to tell pretty easily which one his is. It's the legnth of the seat tube of the frame. I have 2 young kids. When they're that age, different sizing guidelines apply - mainly, how big of a bike can they comfortably pick up, swing a leg over, control while standing, get started and stop gracefully. My 8 year old just graduated from a 16" wheel bike, which by adult standards was way too small for her, but she was comfortable and therefore rode it more effectively. So I guess what I'm saying is, don't over-buy so he grows into it. Get one he can ride well today. Best way to do this is to go to a regular bike shop and test a few. I know Walmart is cheaper, but they don't let you test ride. Good luck Scott in tire size it means the rim or inner part of the tire, in bike sizes it is the length from the stale to the handle bar get a 20" wheelsize. frame size doesnt matter much at this age. 20" is the size of a BMX bike. look on the side of the tire, it should say what size the wheel is. ex. 20x2.10 means the tire is 20" in diameter and 2.10" wide. |
