Bicycle suggestions for non experienced non racer? |
middle aged couple want to start cycling occasionally...average fitness level-prefer not too heavy to lift and take on short camping trips/store in an apt possibly drive in some traffic from time to time. Limited budget. You can get a new 10 speed mountain bike for 70$, Wal-mart etc. This are not great bikes, but you could start with them and throw them away after a year or two. If you spend more on a bike, you pay for lighter weight, less friction on the moving parts with every 50 Dollar up a notch. Since you don't want to compete, this won't pay of for you. I have a pair of 50$ bikes from 5 years ago, which I use for the occasional ride with my wife. They are fine. For my own, I ride with a road bike for 1200$. Buy used. You're probably not going to ride that much and in a year you'll want to sell both of them. (first hand experience). Try to find a good Japanese bike, even if it is 25 years old. Much like cars, Japs know how to build bikes. Sekai, Centurion, Samurai, Fuji and others. Get them with upright handlebars, not racing bars. 10 or 12 speed buying used is fine if you make sure all the components are functional and it good condition. if it for camping trips and places where the ground is not always concrete or paved i would look towards a hybrid bicycle. hybrids are obviously some mountain and some road bike. it can get you places fast and up hills but also can ride on more loose surfaces. As always go to your local shop to make sure you fit the bike you want and they also may have some very good information. Price wise i think you should be fine with a hybrid bike there not a lot as many road bikes are. |
