My bicycle is having gear changing problems,?

Every time I try to change it, they make a noise.. clicking noise. It doesn not want to change very easy. How can I fix it myself with out bringing it to a bike shop?

You don't want to use WD-40 to spray your deraillers or gears with. It stays on and attracts dirt to it which will make matters worse. They make special lubricant for gears that doesn't attract dirt. Check the cables going to the gears to make sure that they move freely, that could be one problem. Cheap cables when left out in the rain or after going through puddles might rust; which would prevent them for moving freely. Have someone hold up the rear of the bike while you turn the pedals by hand and try to change the gears. They should move freely all the way from the smallest gear up through the largest. If they don't then it's either a cable problem or an adjustment problem with the rear derailler. There are usually two screws on the rear derailler, one used to adjust the lower stop and the other adjusts the upper stop. Give that a try. If that fails then take it to a shop.
Hi Cassy,, try this,, either put some machine oil on it ,, the chain,, or spray the chain and gear box with WD-40.... that may help it,,, if you have not messed up a bearing it may work ok....

good luck....
been there, done that
Check you horizontal idlers. They have the gear shift cables going to them and they move the chain from side to side. Just a minor adjustment to get the chain in perfect alignment with the sprocket. Not hard at all. Good luck. Just the one adjustment on back is good for all gears on the rear.
