Gears on my bicycle aren't shifting properly - help?

I broke my hand and now it's pretty much healed...when I went to take my bike out for the first time in weeks, I noticed the rear gears were messed up. It's a 21 speed, 1-3 front and 1-7 back, and when I tried to shift the back gears, the 7 position would only make the chain go up to the 5th position, and when I tried to shift down below 3 the shifter would just stick and not go.

I have no idea how this happened, except that I live in an apartment complex and leave my bike out by one of the doors and someone may have messed with it, intentionally or not. I tried to fix it myself by unscrewing the nut that holds the wire that the shifter uses to change the back gears, changing the tension, but I made it even worse and now it won't shift at all back there.

I know I shouldn't have screwed with it but I didn't want to take it to the shop and have to spend $50-100. Does anyone know what I can do, besides take it to the bike shop? I really have no idea what I'm doing with it.

Very comprehensive guide to derailleur adjustment:

Follow all the steps to the letter and you should be shifting perfectly. First check to see whether you have a low-normal derailleur (bottom of the page).

For your problem, especially check the H & L limit screws (probably what's preventing you from going down past 3 and up past 5) and indexing adjustment (if this isn't adjusted properly, the shifter position also won't give you the gear you want).
My mom hit my bike (softly) with her car and what happened to mine sounds like it happened to yours. the gear shifter that holds the chain has been bent, OR the wire that leads from the shifter on your handle bars has been messed with and is either too long or too short. If the thing is bent, I believe you need a new bike, If its the wire (i think it is considering the fact that people can mess with your bike) than just adjust the wire, simply open up the handle shifter.
On the derailers (on the rear axle and pedal area) themselves are 2 small screws..you need to adjust those.Just using the wire doesn't do anything.

Step 7 and 8
It takes practice..but anyone can do it
Used to fix bikes for 3 years..many years ago..
just go to a bike shop and get a new Shimano shifter- itll be only like $20
Don't mess with cable tension if your rear derailer won't make it to all of the cogs. First loosen the limit screws of the side that is not making it to the extreme cogs half a turn at a time. (H if it won't go to the small cogs and L if it won't go to the large cog). Get it to shift to the top and to the bottom. If that's not happening, your derailer hanger, derailer or frame may be bent. Take it to a shop if this is the case.
Derailers adjustment in bicycle shop cost about $7 to $10 + parts . You do not know what is wrong and I do not have any idea where is the problem , It will be anything , cable , cheap and not good quality bowden , hanger , spring adjustment screw , may you have wear out casette or chain and so on . The best think is to have check it by bicycle mechanik , they do it for free and give you an estimate for the repair .
