I'm thinking of Cycling? Where do I begin? HELP?

The last time I cycled I was 11 and I am now 23! I am not overweight (though this means nothing in actual fitness) but I do absolutely no excercise (but I was pretty active about five years ago). Is 5-10 miles to work (10-12 miles) far, on relatively flat paved surfaces? Can anyone help me? I need help or guidance in what kind of bike I am looking for and/ or size. I have an inside leg measurment of 29", so frames, 16", 17" or 18" ??? are suitable, if this is the case would 17" be the best, I am very petite and 5"2 so don't want to be engulfed by a big bike that in turns makes me feel nervy when riding!? Also what bike, there are so many, I have to admit I love the city/shopper hybrid type bicycles available because not only would I cycle to work but I would like to use it to meet mates in town... cycle to the shops to grab odds and ends...etc. Could a bike like this sustain 20 miles either everyday or 3 times a week to work or would I need to buy another type of bike? Help

thanks

buy a basic bike of whatever design like. you are the one cycling it, not us. don't dump your money into a top notch bike cos you might drop the idea of cycling around after some time. but if you are really into it later, then pamper yourself with a good bike that is compatible with your budget.
start by having short rides around your neighborhood before you cycle to work. assess your fitness first. you need to know if you could cycle that distance and how long it takes before you cycle to work.
as i always say when you cycle, you could do without lots of things but not the safety gears. helmets, gloves and lights (front and rear) are a must. these things do make a difference when you are not in luck....

have fun
Begin by blood doping followed by the use of E.P.O. If synthetic testosterone is available, use it. Enter the Tour de France.

Any questions?
sounds like you would like an introduction to "road cycling"
get thee to your local bike shop, look for an entry level road bike, and "get fitted" to make sure the bike is set up for your body and style of riding
cost for bike: 600 to 800 bucks, start with an aluminum bike, like a Specialized Allez or Giant OCR1
shoes: 75 to 100 bucks
pedals: 100 to 200 bucks
helmet: 50 to 100
chamois cycling shorts: 50 to 100
sunglasses: 25 to 100
good luck and have fun!

start off with a bike that does not cost a lot, like 200-400, and after a while if you are really into biking, buy a bike that costs 600-1500. shoes dont really matter, but helmet does, altho you dont have to wear them since ur 23 now.
Please do not waste time ! Want to see you in bicycle shop , there you begin . Bike shop guys is knowlegeble and I am shure that they will take care about you and your bicycle . Wish you good weather , many nice kilometres and no punctures .
Find a local bike shop, tell them what kind or riding you want to do and try some different bikes. They will fit you to the bike. Of course you'll need a helmet, floor pump some other stuff too ;-)

Ask at the shop what clubs are in your area. Most have novice rides. These will show you the ropes of how to ride safely in traffic, how to maintain the bike. Try different rides (look for those that say "no drop" at first). Find a cycling community you enjoy.

It's simple really; find a shop, a club, and a bike.
