Whats the L plate law? |
i have been riding a 125cc scooter for 2years,bought brand new from bike shop who put on the L plates. Have just been told by a qualified motorbike instructor that my front L plate is illegal because it has been cut on both bottom edges to fit front of bike, although not a major offence (never been stopped by police),surely the bike shop should have known this? as they put them on! They (bike shop)have been around for over 25years!!!!!!!! I didn't find out putting frames around your rear plate was illegal until I got a ticket for it. OK, I'm lyin, I got the ticket for goin 92 mph, only a warning for improper license plates display...just don't mess with them - attach them in the same shape you received them. Any cutting, obstructing, whatever, is against the law. Did the law just change? You might want to look into that before you get mad at a shop. Just request a new front plate and "bend" it. they have to be a certain measurement im not sure what it is but I never displayed a front L-plate on my motorbike because they only used to last a couple of days L plates are I believe meant to be 7" square. It's true that you shouldn't cut them down but I wouldn't worry about it unless its excessive e.g. most of the white cut away leaving only the red "L". Many bike shops do this in order to fit the plates neatly on the machine. As long as the plate can be clearly seen & it's meaning can be understood I think the chances of being stopped by the police are next to zero. If you are taking the scooter for your bike test it might be worth putting on a full sized plate for the test just in case you get a jobsworth driving examiner, although all the ones I know wouldn't bat an eyelid as long as the plate was a reasonable size. If you have been riding this scooter for the last 2 years without problems why worry? you were told right.the law regarding l plates is; they must be displayed front and back they are 7inches square and have to stay that size ie you cant cut them down to make them fit they must be made of a reflective material they must be displayed flat ie you cant wrap them round a fork leg or over the front mudguard. im a motorcycle riding instructor if you have not been stopped yet dont worry. i saw someone around my town with a stick on L plate wrapped around forks and ive seen police drive by and he has never been stopped to my knowledge. |
