Spoke tension? |
how can i tell if my spokes are tensioned right with out a tool and please dont tell me to go to a bike shop or pluck them to see if theres a dull sounding one Since you qualified your question by not allowing us to tell you to by the right tool or listen for a dull one, there really is no way to tell. As long as the wheel runs true and you don't have any that are noticable looser than the others, the wheel is probably ok. But, with out the tool, there's no way to properly assess tension. Other than the 2 ways that you don't want to know about there isn't much you can do to make sure everything is correct. You could turn your bike upside down, turn the wheel slowly and run a credit card against the spokes to find any that might be tensioned too high or too low but it certainly won't be reliable. In order to tell whether your spokes are tensioned right you will have to have some type of interaction with them... nobody can just look at them and tell. On top of that, spoke tension depends on how you use the bike as well as the materials and combination of spoke, hub, and rim. When I build a wheel the initial tension is determined by the number of threads showing below the nipple. I usually start with 3 threads showing on all of them, then go from there. Of course, this changes if the rim is offset or if I had to manage with spokes that were slightly wrong in length. Bottom line- nothing beats the right tool or experience. 27 years in the industry your shyt out of luck then man, its an artform not something you can tell someone over the internet in 5 seconds. been riding for 30 years, can tweak a wheel to get me home, but knowing a good wheel man to true your wheels is a great riding benefit. learning to do wheels is a winter activity. take it to a shop. buy a spare wheel. |
