How do I grease the bearings in my steering?

I have a suzuki gsxr600, and my steering is stiff. someone told me my bearings in the steering stem needing greasing. "HOW DO I DO THAT?" I can't afford to take it too a bike shop...all positive answers will be appreciated...thnx

The easiest way is to take the front fairing off. #2 jack the bike so that the front end is at least 4 inches off the ground. Make sure the bike is stable, you will have to do some wiggleing later. place a brick or a couple of 2x4's under the front tire, try to leave a little room between the tire and the wood. #3 lossen the forks from the top triple tree (thats what the handle bars connect to!) and take the bolts out. #4 loosen the nut in the center of the triple tree and take it off along with the washers. #5 use a rubber or plastic mallet (hammer) or if you don't have that use a hammer and a peice of wood that will fit between the fork and the center "steering" tube of the frame, as you work both sides evenly hit the uderside of the tripple tree upward to remove it from the forks and the steering tube, as it start's to come off the tire will drop down onto the wood (that's ok) finish hitting the tree off. Once it's off move up and forward. now look down the steering tube, right around the edge tere are your top bearings, go ahead and lather them with grease, just don't over do it! ( if useing hammer w/ wood, place wood on triple tree and hit the wood). #5 wiggle the wood out from under the front tire carefully 'the bearing's could fall out" , then look up under the steering tube and there's the other bearings lather them up. Now lift the front tire back up into position and stabilize with the wood or bricks, now put the top triple tree back into place and tap it down into psition evenly (make sure every thing stays lined up on the way down) replace the bolt's and torque them properly. test steering if still to tight loosen center nut slightly until steering is comfortable, don't get it to loose or it could vibrate off while riding! after it'all good put the fairing back on. Use the right tools, damaged nuts and bolt's will cost you! Source(s): 25 years of expierience!
