Can i make my own carbon fiber?

just out of curiosity, a mechanic at a bike shop told me that theoretically, a person could make their own carbon. it wont be as strong as Trek OCLV, but it is basically is a fabric that can be woven and baked in an oven, from what he says.

i want to give this a try if its possible, just to make a few knick knacks for decoration. i love the way carbon looks.

yes, but it ain't easy. You need to carbonize the thread, which takes exotic chemicals and high tempetures. you then have to spin the carbonized fibers and weave them just like cloth. which takes exotic machines. The point is you have to do the carbonation first, then the spinning and weaving. Baking a piece of cloth in your oven will not produce anything of any worth
Carbon Fiber is is cross woven Carbon Filament Thread that is then coated in a resin to at stability.

Yes if you get the right material you can make your own Carbon Fiber

This man Brano Meres made his own carbon fiber frame and shows how he did it on his website: www.bmeres.com
I am an ex-bicycle framebuilder, Yahoo search "Dave Moulton Bicycle."
Buy it, it's more easy
You can also buy carbon fiber "sheets" (like textiles bought at wal-mart, sold by the yard) and paint on epoxy's from online composite dealers. So if you're just trying to make decorative stuff it shouldn't be that hard.

P.S. Carbon prices a increasing drastically due to all the raw materials being bought up by aero/astro space companies around the world.
