Concerned shopper for trek 1000?

read alot about this bike. this would be my 1st bike, shopping for a bike for the ms150. all owners of this bike say the same thing, shifters are bad and the tires. i dont want to be changing tires every 30 miles really dont want any problems. what is the next upgrade from the trek 1000.

If you are staying with Trek, the next model up is the 1500. The 1500 is a substantially better bike. Hence, I would expect to pay much more for it. However, it puts you into a group of bikes with race level components. It comes with a full group of Shimano 105 components including shifters, derailleurs, etc. There are only two levels above this. With 105, you will get a bike that will shift and perform much smoother and more accurately.

I really wouldn't base your decision on whether to buy a particular bike on tires. Tires are disposable. I go through them twice to three time a year. Find the bike that you like and purchase the tires of your choosing. The shop will probably give you a deal.
I like the 1000 myself. I've heard a few people put down the Sora parts though. I've also heard others say it's a good entry level bike to start with. Another bike that's close to being the same bike as the Trek is the Tomasso Imola. And it's a few hundred cheaper than the 1000. Around $400-$425...It's mainly only sold online though. And only comes in red. If you can, test ride the Trek and get a feel for it yourself. It's your money, and you're the one who will be riding it. Only you can decide what's right for you.
The 1500 is the next one up for '07, but if you look around at your local bike shops, you may be able to find a 1200 left over from '06. This is a great bike for a beginner and it has a combination of Tiagra/105 which would be much better than Sora. Since it's a leftover, it's most likely going to be on sale (~$600?) as well. You might have to put in a little leg work, but it would be worth it.

Don't worry about the tires. You can always upgrade those.
