Installing bottom bracket?

What are the steps to install a bottom bracket on a new mtb frame? Does the hole where the bottom bracket have to be cut or chased? Also how much does it cost to have a mtb frame chased or cut at a moutain bike shop? Any ideas

if you get a same sized BB then no modification is needed. lets say you have a 68x113mm shell, as long as you get that same size, it basically taking the old one out and threading the new on in.

a BB has a removable cup on one side and a fixed cup on the other side, normally. you need a special tool specific to you BB to extract and install the cups. there are so many different styles, so consult a bike shop first. the removers cost around $15. insert the tool and remove the cups.

!!!the non drive side is reverse threaded!!!
the drive side is normal thread. once the old BB is out, clean the threads with rubbing alcohol and put some grease on 'em after.

when you install the new BB, make sure you get the left and right side correct. there will be L and R marked on the piece itself. R indicates the drive side.

install the left cup first 9about halfways in) then thread in the other side all the way. this keeps the BB aligned, otherwise it might go in crooked. tighten down the left side now, and put some good torque on it.

after that, its all set. it will feel rough at first, but once you install the cranks, it will take a few hours of riding to break in and get everything running smooth.

good luck
You need to measure your bottom bracket shell (without the BB in it) to find out the width. It will be either 68mm or 73mm wide. then you buy a bottom bracket that fits that width.

All mountain bikes are English threaded, and unless you screw it up BIG time you should not need to chase threads.

The important thing to know is that EACH SIDE IS THREADED DIFFERENTLY.

One cup is reverse threaded, so it will screw in counter-clockwise and you would be wise to pay CLOSE attention to this. The threads are also very fine, and the cups should thread in easily by hand until you are CERTAIN they aren't cross-threaded.

Use plenty of grease on the threads or you'll go insane from some mysterious creak 6 months from now. Tighten to manufacturers specs using a torque wrench, which is more important now than it used to be.
