Do new bikes really "settle"? |
I just bought this bike a week ago and shifting is getting worse the more I ride it. The derailluer is shimano, although an entry level grade. The brakes (tektro) are coming loose as well. The guy at the shop said the brake problem was from me not putting the wheel back on right, but I haven't taken it off since he fixed it last and it's doing it again. He told me and another customer that since the bike has not been ridden much, it will have these problems in the beginning. Is this true? Should I just bring the bike back for another adjustment or just take it back period?? This is frustrating for a beginner. Yes, the cables stretch a bit when you first start using them, which affects the brakes and shifters. So most bike shops have a free checkup period. It should settle in after a few rides. As long as they're adjusting it free, no problem, though the guy sounds like a bit of a goob, blaming the customer for a routine adjustment. Scott p.s. as long as it's just cable stretch, you're ok. Nothing should be coming loose or rattling though. There is normally a break-in period for any new bike. Just make sure all the nuts and bolts or allen screws are tight so nothing falls off. Most shops offer a free 30 day tune-up for all new bikes purchased. Yes this is very common and it is simple. With a new bike, cables stretch as you begin to sue it. This causes the shifting to feel slugging and the brakes to feel loose. This will happen with all bikes from a $100 Walmart bike to a $5000 pro racer. If you don't ride as much, it will simply prolong these problems and you will have them for a bit longer. |
