barbie and ken live in different towns 16.8 miles apart. they want to ride their bikes and meet at a shop between the 2 towns. barbie can ride 5 km/h and ken can ride 7.5km/h. if they both start at 10:30a.m.,they should meet closest to what time?? a. 11:20am b.11:30am c.11:40 am d. 11:45 e. 11:50 am Let, x be the distance of the shop from barbie's town, I'm assuming that all the units pertaining to distance and speed are in either km or miles, Time taken is the same, x/5 = (16.8 - x)/7 7x = 84 - 5x 12x = 84 x = 7 time taken = 7/5 = 1.4 hrs = 84 minutes They take 84 minutes, so they will meet around 11:54 am, So the approximate Answer is E.) 11.50 am idk how to do it but i had tihs question before ecxcept barbie was madonna and ken was brittney xD but the answer is C 11:40 Too much to do for my brain. First you used MILES in the distance, then you use KILOMETERS instead of miles for speed/ per hour. Conversion has to happen. Assuming the distance is equal between the two towns, you're stuck with calculating when the slower traveler arrives to determine when they meet. 16.8/(5+7.5) =1.344hrs =1hr 20mins 38.4seconds before they meet. So answer is E at 11.50am Please note that the distance should be 16.8km and not miles, otherwise none of the answer will be correct. OK, so they're going towards each other at a speed of 5 + 7.5 = 12.5km/h. 16.8 miles = 27.04 km So at 12.5 km/h, it would take 27.04/12.5 = 2.16 hrs = 2hrs 9 and a bit minutes 10:30am + 2 hrs 9 mins = 12:39pm This isn't one of the options... so looking back, I'm guessing that all figures are in km or all in miles, not a mixture of the two as you've indicated....\ 16.8 units/12.5 units per hour = 1.344 hrs = 1 + (0.344x60) mins = 1 hrs 20 minutes (plus some seconds) So time = 10:30am + 1hr 20min = 11:50am So the answer is E And be more careful about miles and km next time!!!! As they are moving towards each other,their relative speed will be 5+7.5 =12.5 km/h They will meet after(16.8/12.5) or 1.344 hrs from the time of starting 1.344 hrs=1 hr20 minutes 38 seconds Hence they will meet at 10-30 am+1 hr 20m 38 sec=11-50-38 am or approaximately at 11-50 am keep in mind you have to convert km to mi or mi to km. i would divide the distance in half (since the town is half way between) since barbie is slower your going to want to meet at her time so when you convert the 5 km in to miles then you can divide that number so that the equation looks like X/ # of miles=8.4 miles/ 1hr and multiply. change that answear into minutes and add them to 10:30 |
