Motorcycle exhaust smoke? |
I've just recently purchased a 1987 Yamaha Fazer, but it had been sitting for 2 years prior. The previous owner had left some gas in the engine but with a new battery and fresh tank the bike started up right away. Since purchase, I've flushed the brake lines and coolant, but haven't gotten to the oil yet. The bike also will stall out if the choke is all the way in but idles at low enough RPM's with the choke a little out. Unfortunately I've noticed that there is a lot of white smoke coming out of the right side exhaust (it's a dual exhaust) when the bike is ridden at higher speeds/RPM's. If it's just let to sit and idle, no smoke comes out, but after a few minutes of riding...smokes pouring out. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be? If so, any idea on the cost of repair at a shop? Thanks I'm not familiar with that particular bike but if it's white smoke I would have to assume that it's water cooled and has a bad head gasket or a cracked head or water jacket in the cylinder that corresponds to the pipe that has the smoke. No idea of the cause. Just wanted to chirp in that most bike shops will give a free diagnosis and repair estimate. I suggest you take it to a bike shop. Call ahead to find out when they are least busy and will have more time to chat with you about your bike. well the exhaust smoke,could be a valve or head but first I'd start from scratch and empty and flush all the fluids to include the oil and filter and remove the carb/carbs and rebuild them ,fuel will gum up with time and the choke plate is probally sticking and most deffinatley get a service/shop manual ......good luck and keep us in tune on your progress Scooter is probably 100% correct on this one. Check the engine oil color. If it has a Grey tint, it is contaminated with coolant, and further proof he is right. You could ask your local bike shop for an estimate to replace the cylinder head gasket, then judge for yourself if it is worth having the work undertaken. |
