MPH problem with my 06 Suzuki GSX-R600?

Since I have had the bike I always felt that my speedometer was a couple of MPH's off. I thought this cuz everyone seemed to be doing around 60-65 MPH in the 45. Everyone would be blowing by me whenever I did the speed limit. I had one of my friends do the speed limit right next to me to see if it was true. And I came to the conclusion that it is 7 MPH off. So really when I was doing 45, it would say I was doing 52. My friend says he has the same problem that I do. So my question is: first, why is it doing this? second, is it something I can fix or will it have to go into the shop?? Thanks in advance.

The problem seems to be in the japanese speedos. for some reason they are usually off several mph. in my club, some of our members ride harley, some ride japanese. all the jap bikes speedos are off compared to the harley speedos and the chase vehicles. several of our members were complaining about the high rate of speed we were traveling, when we were actually doing speed limit or under.
I have an 05 Suzuki DRZ 400. It does this as well. I am just just telling you this because it might be a Suzuki / Kawasaki thing. I do not have a reason why this happens.
Most bike (and cars by the way) speedo's are notoriously inaccurate. There are "speedo healers" on the market that will correct these but are not that cheap. There are a few class action suits out there that I know of but no closure yet.
A decent gps unit will also tell you what your actual speed is.
One of my biggest concerns here is that your odometer is probably counting miles too fast as well, decreasing the value of your bike. You should contact your dealer and try to get it adjusted. I think there are kits out there that do it for you as well, but i don't know where to find them.
the speedo sender is probably dirty.left side crankcase forward of shifter 1 allen screw remove and clean with carb cleaner.had same problem with my gsxr 750 and this fixed it.
the law apparently says that auto makers must be within 5% of the correct speed. american, japanese,german,italian...
