Has anyone had success making their own motorcyle paddock stand? |
These are the U-shaped stands that you jack up the front or rear of your bike with. I looked on-line and in shops. They go from $60 to $160. I could spring for a centerstand for $200, but that would add unwanted weight to my bike. It does not look tough to make a paddock stand. Has anyone done this with metal tubes? PVC tubes? If yes, how did you go about it? Or, what are some clever and inexpensive ways to jack up the front of rear of your bike? There easy to make if you can weld & have an ARC welder.. but it depends on your bike where they engage...single sided swing arms etc.. I think the best Idea is ones that lift the Frame under the motor.. you could work out one that lifts under the motor if your bike has a motor thats a stressed member.. If you dont have access to a welder you may even be able to bolt one together or maybe use some threaded plumbling fittings.....dont think I would use the PVC pipe in case you need to lift it while its hot.. Ive used a trolley jack from a car to pick up the bike a number of times...just place a small steel plate that goes from one frame member to the other... then put the trolley jack under the plate look at these links.. http://pages.infinit.net/mcrides/product... http://www.andersonstands.com/gallery/mo... best & simplest so far MH1000 http://www.extremebikescustoms.com/motor... could make this with 1 inch galv plumbing pipe & a 1 inch threaded T piece... Source(s): last one looks pretty easy to make... If you can weld borrow someones stand and copy it. Do not use plastic PVC. You can buy a set of Handy stands or T- rex stands for about $100 for front and rear. These arnt the greatest of stands, but are cheap and work fine. Depending on what kind of work youre doing on your bike you can use jack stands with a rod running thru your rear axle, jack stands supported on foot peg brackets, hang tighdowns over the rafters and connect to your bike etc. i use an old milk crate. cost me a trip across my yard to the shed to get it and i gotta be honest, it beats the heck out of the $150 aluminun stands at the bike shop. you can even customize it if you're real ambitous. |
